Lion, Botswana

A Captivating First Encounter

Our first lion sighting in Botswana was nothing short of captivating!

It was mid-morning, and the heat was beginning to build, the sun creeping higher in the sky. The air was thick and still, carrying the dry scent of dust and warm earth as we approached.

We weren’t the only ones drawn to the scene—several trucks were already parked in front of us, blocking the view, their occupants eagerly watching the two majestic brothers.

Positioning for the Perfect Shot

Chris (our guide), knowing I was the only one in our group with a camera, made sure I had the best vantage point. I found myself in the perfect spot, peering through a narrow gap between the bonnet of one truck and the back of another, with a clear line of sight to two lion brothers lying lazily in the shade of a scruffy bush.

The scene before me was extraordinary—almost surreal. One of the lions stood up and walked over to his brother, nudging him affectionately. The tenderness of the moment caught me off guard, both unexpected and incredibly moving.

The first lion wandered off, disappearing into the golden grass. The second, still lying down, watched his brother for a moment before finally sitting up. He stretched, then let out a deep, dramatic yawn, baring a full set of teeth. With one last glance around at us, he rose to his feet and silently followed his sibling across the plains.

Chris acted quickly, expertly maneuvering the truck. We navigated through trees and bushes to claim the perfect position ahead of the second lion—before any of the other vehicles had a chance to move.

Face to Face with a Lion

We had barely come to a stop when he emerged from the tall grass, striding directly toward us. His pace was steady, purposeful. For a moment, it felt as if his gaze was locked onto the truck, his eyes fixed on us with an intensity that sent a shiver down my spine.

My heart pounded—not from fear, but from sheer excitement. I had been hoping for the chance to capture a powerful, front-on portrait of a lion, and now, at last, the opportunity was unfolding right in front of me.

I knelt down on the floor of the truck, ignoring the discomfort as the metal ribs dug into my knees. All that mattered was getting the shot. I wanted to be at eye level—where the intensity of his gaze, the power in his stride, and the sheer presence of the lion would create the most dramatic and compelling image possible.

A Moment of Brotherhood

The second lion joined his brother briefly under the shade of a tree. For a moment, they were forehead to forehead, completely unaware of us as they shared a quiet, intimate exchange. The world seemed to fade away as we watched them, suspended in time.

Then, without warning, he began walking toward the side of our truck.

Locked Eyes and Holding My Breath

At that point, I was kneeling on the floor of the vehicle, trying to get photos at eye level, and as he passed so close, it felt as though we were eye to eye. It seemed like our gazes locked, and the moment was charged with an almost palpable intensity.

Chris, ever calm, leaned in and whispered, “Don’t move…” A few seconds later, he added, “Don’t make a sound…” And finally, in a near whisper, “…But it’s okay to take photos!

By the time he finished speaking, the moment had already passed. I was gutted to have missed such a rare and incredible opportunity, but at that moment, I knew my safety—and that of everyone in the truck—had to come first. We simply couldn’t know how the lion might react.

A Silent Departure

The lion walked down the length of our truck, staring up at us intently. He continued past the back of the truck before disappearing into the undergrowth.

A few moments later, his brother stood and walked past the front of our truck. He was so close he almost brushed the bonnet as he moved on, following his brother into the wild, both disappearing together into the dense bush.

We all let out a collective exhale, the tension finally easing as we processed the magnitude of the experience. The quiet that followed felt almost surreal after such an intense encounter. Then, just as we were still absorbing what had happened, our friend muttered something about needing new underpants, breaking the mood with a burst of laughter. The release of tension was instant, and we all couldn’t help but laugh, the adrenaline still coursing through us.

An Unforgettable Experience

It was a remarkable experience—an unforgettable moment in the wild, where we witnessed the power and grace of these incredible creatures up close, a memory etched into my mind forever.
